New David Selby Book & Appearances in West Virginia

David Selby's (Quentin Collins) latest book is A Better Place, available online from the West Virginia Book Company. This 228-page paperback retails for $12.95. Shipping is $5.00 for the first book and $.50 for each additional copy.

"A Better Place is a loving tribute to West Virginia. The book is part memoir and part social commentary by native West Virginian David Selby, who has had a long, distinguished acting career. He is probably best known for his roles as Quentin Collins on the TV series Dark Shadows and Richard Channing on Falcon Crest.

In A Better Place, Selby re-visits the West Virginia of his youth and examines the lasting effects of an Appalachian upbringing. He voices concerns about current problems facing West Virginia, concerns he feels compelled to face in the wake of 9-11.

Some chapters are touchingly devoted to family members, such as "The Carpenter," his hard-working father’s story, and "A West Virginia Doctor," about his father-in-law who founded a hospital in Mullens. He writes with reverence about his mother who grew up in a coal camp, but upon leaving it, never looked back.

Selby discusses the state’s absentee landlords, pollution, and chronic appearance at the bottom of most national indicators of health and well-being. He compares out-of-work Latinos in L.A. to unemployed coal miners in West Virginia. Selby examines the pride and prejudice of mountaineers. He quotes his favorite authors as he tries to make sense of a chaotic world but looks toward a hopeful future for West Virginia.

A Better Place, will debut at the West Virginia Book Festival on October 22-23 at the Charleston Civic Center. Selby will be signing copies of the book on Saturday, October 22, from noon to 3:00 pm. On Sunday, October 23, he will read from the book at noon and then sign copies of the book until 6:00 pm.

On Tuesday, October 25, he will read from and sign copies of A Better Place from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Barnes and Noble on University Town Center Drive in Morgantown, West Virginia. In addition to A Better Place, copies of In and Out of the Shadows and My Mother's Autumn will be available for purchase. David will only sign these books. No other items will be signed.

More Information on the 1991 Dark Shadows DVD Release

Information published on Sony's web site indicates that the upcoming 3-disc Dark Shadows Revival series will be presented in a widescreen format. Unfortunately, the 1991 series was not actually filmed in this aspect ratio, meaning that the artificially created widescreen format will result in the loss of portions of the original image at the top and bottom of the screen. MPI Home Video still has some VHS copies of the 1991 series available. These present the show in its original aspect ratio and include bonus features that will not be available on the DVD release. If you're still interested in the DVD release, it will be available on October 18, and it can be pre-ordered from Amazon by clicking here.

Director Henry Kaplan Dies

Dark Shadows director Henry Kaplan died on September 14 at the age of 79 according to an obituary appearing in the September 19 edition of the New York Times. In addition to his work on Dark Shadows, Kaplan worked on All My Children and The Doctors. (Special thanks to Midnite and Charles Ellis of the Dark Shadows Forums for posting this information.)

1991 Dark Shadows Series Comes to DVD

During the recent Dark Shadows Hollywood Weekend, it was announced that the 1991 Dark Shadows series, often referred to as the Dark Shadows Revival Series, will be released on DVD in October. The series starred Ben Cross as Barnabas Collins and Joanna Going as Victoria Winters. It originally aired on NBC in primetime. The episodes will be released in their original broadcast format in a 3-disc set which is set for an October 18, 2005 release. A schedule of events for the Dark Shadows Hollywood Weekend to be held July 29-31 at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel has been posted on the Dark Shadows Festival web site. Scheduled guests include Nancy Barrett (Carolyn Stoddard), Robert Cobert (composer), Kathleen Cody (Hallie Stokes), John Karlen (Willie Loomis), Jerry Lacy (Reverend Trask), Diana Millay (Laura Collins), Lara Parker (Angelique), Christopher Pennock (Jeb Hawkes), Robert Rodan (Adam), Geoffrey Scott (Sky Rumson), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans), David Selby (Quentin Collins), James Storm (Gerard Stiles), Sy Tomashoff (scenic designer), and Marie Wallace (Eve). Brian Kellow, author of The Bennetts: An Acting Family, will host a tribute to Joan Bennett (Elizabeth Collins Stoddard) with actress June Lockhart (Lassie, Lost in Space) and Diana Anderson, Bennett's daughter. Marie Wallace Pens Career Memoir

Marie Wallace (Eve, Jenny Collins) has written a career memoir entitled On Stage and in Shadows. It features a foreword by Dark Shadows co-star Jonathan Frid (Barnabas Collins) and a preface by Ruth Buzzi. In addition to her television work, Wallace appeared in numerous Broadway productions including Gypsy and Sweet Charity. Actor Dana Elcar Dies

Dana Elcar (Sheriff Patterson) died of complications of pneumonia at age 77 on June 6. Elcar is perhaps best known for his work on the television series MacGyver, which ran on ABC from 1985 to 1992. In the midst of that series' run, he began to lose his sight due to glaucoma. Rather than writing his character out of the show, producers opted to make Elcar's character suffer from loss of vision as well. In addition to MacGyver, he appeared in a wide variety of television series, including Baretta with Robert Blake and Black Sheep Squadron with Robert Conrad. His film appearances included All of Me, The Learning Tree, The Sting, and 2010.

Dan Curtis Directed Double-Feature DVD

Donna McKechnie to Perform at Joe's Pub in NYC in October

Playbill.com reports that Donna McKechnie (Amanda Harris) will perform at Joe's Pub in New York on Monday evenings in October. The concert evenings are entitled Here's to the Public! The Music of Joe Papp's Public Theater and, as the name suggests, will feature songs from musicals that were originally produced by the Public Theater. Dark Shadows Featured in Scary Monsters Magazine

Issue #55 of Scary Monsters Magazine will include a feature on Dark Shadows entitled "Don't Open That Coffin!" It includes new interviews with Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie Evans), David Selby (Quentin Collins), and Marie Wallace (Eve). The issue will first be available on June 24 at Monster Bash. Another New David Selby Film Project

DavidSelby.com, the official David Selby (Quentin Collins) web site, is reporting that David will appear in the independent thriller Unknown starring Jim Caviezel, Greg Kinnear, Bridget Moynahan, Joe Pantoliano, and Jeremy Sisto. Plot details are hard to come by, but media reports indicate that the film will resemble Memento in that neither the participants nor the viewers will know who the bad guy is until the very end of the film.

Anthony George Passes Away

Anthony George, who succeeded Mitchell Ryan in the role of Burke Devlin and went on to portray Jeremiah Collins in the 1795 storyline, passed away at the age of 84 on March 16, 2005. In addition to his work on Dark Shadows, George was a regular in the early 1960's series Checkmate and portrayed Dr. Will Vernon on One Life to Live. He also made numerous guest appearances on series such as Wonder Woman and Simon and Simon. Shadowgram, the official DS newsletter, reports that George and Don Briscoe (Chris Jennings), who passed away in October, will be remembered at the upcoming Dark Shadows Hollywood Weekend on July 29-31.

David Selby in Black Hole

David Selby (Quentin Collins) spent the end of 2004 filming another SCI FI Channel movie. The new project is titled Black Hole and stars Judd Nelson and Kristy Swanson. Selby's character is General Ryker. According to press reports, the film involves an experiment that goes awry, leading to the formation of a black hole on Earth. Another New Movie Project for David Selby

David Selby's (Quentin Collins) next film project will be End Game. According to media reports, the film stars Cuba Gooding, Jr. as a Secret Service agent who teams up with a reporter, played by Angie Harmon, to investigate the conspiracy behind the assassination of the President. Peter Coyote is slated to play the President, and Burt Reynolds is reportedly also in the cast. Filming will take place in Spokane, Washington.
