L.A. Theatre Works

L.A. Theatre Works produces audio theatre before a live studio audience. LATW performances can be heard on The Play's the Thing on FM 89.3 KPCC, Southern California Public Radio. LATW also collaborates with the Voice of America and the Smithsonian Associates, among others, to produce the "Radio Theatre Live" series in Washington, D.C.

Plays from the LATW Catalog are available on audio tape and compact disc for sale to both individuals and libraries. LATW also has a Library Access Project which allows underserved libraries to obtain copies of their productions.

In the past couple of years, David Selby has been involved in Washington, D.C and L.A. productions of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial and a L.A. productions of The Autumn Garden, On the Waterfront, and Pack of Lies.

Hugh Whitemore's Pack of Lies

  • David Selby appeared in Hugh Whitemore's Pack of Lies on June 16, 17, 18, and 20, 2004.
  • The description from the LATW web site:

    Actual events during the Cold War inspired this thriller with present-day relevance in the current era of the Patriot Act. In suburban London, loyalty, duty, and friendship conflict with one another when the Jacksons slowly discover the Krogers, their neighbors and cherished best friends, are Russian spies. A gripping play that may leave you wondering exactly what it is those nice people next door are really up to.

  • Members of the Los Angeles Dark Shadows fan club, Shadows in the Sun, attended the June 20 afternoon performance of Pack of Lies and met with David Selby afterwards. A report and photos are posted on victoriawinters.net.

Budd Schulberg's On the Waterfront

  • David Selby appeared in the L.A. Theatre Works audio theatre production of On the Waterfront on December 11-15, 2002 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial

  • David Selby appeared in live performances of the theatrical adaptation of Herman Wouk's Caine Mutiny Court Martial performed for radio by L.A. Theatre Works on June 6-10, 2001 at the Skirball Cultural Center.

  • The cast list in the print edition of the Calendar section of the June 3 L.A. Times included Grant Shaud, James Avery, Kenny Williams, Chuma Hunter Gault, and Ian Lithgow. The original press materials had Stacy Keach headlining.

  • David was also involved in a radio drama production of Herman Wouk's Caine Mutiny Court Martial in November 2000 in Washington, DC.

Lillian Hellman's The Autumn Garden

  • David Selby had a role in LA Theatre Works' production of Lillian Hellman's The Autumn Garden performed January 10-14, 2001 in Los Angeles.

 

My Mother's Autumn

In the summer of 2000, David Selby released a book of poems entitled, My Mother's Autumn. The poems deal with the sudden death and illness of his mother and also serve as a tribute to her. In addition to publishing the book, David also released a compact disc on which he reads all of the poems from the book. For ordering information, see the On the Page section of the site.

Dark Shadows Music

In 1969, the Dark Shadows soundtrack was released. The album featured David Selby's voiceover on his character Quentin Collins' signature tune, "Quentin's Theme (Shadows of the Night)." A deluxe edition of the soundtrack was re-released on compact disc in 1999. It features all of the original recordings plus some bonus cast interviews conducted during the original run of the show. During the original run of Dark Shadows, David also recorded a duet with co-star Nancy Barrett (Carolyn Collins Stoddard). "I Wanna Dance with You" is featured on the Dark Shadows 30th Anniversary Collection.
