In 1981, David Selby appeared as Doug Blake in Rich and Famous. This was the final film directed by the legendary George Cukor. Candice Bergen played David's wife, Merry Noel Blake, and Jacqueline Bisset played her friend, Liz Hamilton. The film chronicles the tumultuous friendship between the two women.

Liz is a novelist, respected in academic circles for her first novel, but she has difficulty producing another book. Merry decides to take up writing herself, turning out a number of successful novels that are decidedly less intellectual than Liz's work.
