Dark Shadows: The Salem Branch by Lara Parker

Happenstance
Happenstance From the inside cover of Happenstance:

"The course of a life is a road

happenstance . . .

So you cast the dice,
knowing the road does not stop,
it only bids farewell."

We dream, we hope, we plan. Life may or may not go along with us. It sends people and events our way. Some help, some hinder. Underneath it all, underneath the seeming indifference of a sometimes cynical and unconcerned world, a structure of love and support holds our world together.

Happenstance may be the direction we are led by adventures or misadventures, but happenstance also brings us love and friendships so strong that we can survive -- and enjoy -- the trip.

You can view a clip of David reading "The Headshot" at the 1999 Dark Shadows Festival in the Audio/Video Clips section of the site. This poem originally appeared in In and Out of the Shadows and was reprinted in Happenstance.

Happenstance, David's most recent collection of poetry, debuted at the 2001 Dark Shadows Festival in New York in August.
